Oral Pathology and Microbiology
Overview
Oral Pathology and Microbiology is a branch of dentistry and pathology that deals with identification of diseases of oral and maxillofacial region. The essence of this science lies in unravelling the diseases at the macroscopic and microscopic levels.
The department interacts with BDS students over the course of their first three years of undergraduate life. During I BDS, the students are taught about Dental Anatomy, Oral Histology, Oral Embryology and Oral Physiology. The subjects of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, and Forensic Odontology are taught to II BDS and III BDS students.
MDS programme in Oral Pathology and Microbiology is a 3 year curriculum, during which the students are trained to excel in disease diagnosis and also to become accomplished academicians.
The department renders the following services:
- Free biopsy service for our institution, and also for other hospitals and private clinics in and around Tiruchengode
- Oral cytology for screening, in the outpatient department as well as in camps
- Special stains and immunohistochemistry
Key Features
The department is well-ventilated and spacious with excellent infrastructure, unique ambience, and is blessed with the best of faculty, that enlightens and enriches the students’ knowledge. The department has a separate unit for postgraduate and undergraduate studies.
Undergraduate students are trained to carve teeth in wax, identify microscopic slides of normal structures and alterations in their structure in diseases. The UG unit is equipped with
- Standard amenities essential for practical study and demonstrations.
- Fifty microscopes are available for undergraduate student use.
- Museum with various study models, and pathologic specimens.
The PG unit is furnished with
- Well-equipped histopathology laboratory that includes semi-automatic microtome, incubator, microwave for rapid tissue processing, etc.
- Binocular Olympus microscopes – Each PG student is allotted one binocular microscope individually when they start their MDS course.
- Pentahead Olympus research microscope with facility for dark field microscopy, polarizing microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, and digital image analysis.
